Local students graduate from Gettysburg College

These and other themes were reflected during Gettysburg College's 184th Commencement ceremony as we celebrated the accomplishments of our 611 graduates and looked forward with them to the future. Founded in 1832, Gettysburg College is a highly selective four-year residential college of liberal arts and sciences with a strong academic tradition that includes Rhodes Scholars, a Nobel laureate and other distinguished scholars among its alumni.

SRU theatre department prepares for first performance of the year
Although the cool temperatures might tempt you to want to do nothing but settle on the couch with a blanket and binge watch Netflix - don't do it. Instead, grab a ticket for the Slippery Rock University Theatre Department's production of "Concord Floral." The production will run Oct. 19-20 and 23-24 at 7:30 p.m. and Oct. 21 and 25 at 2 p.m. in the University Union Multipurpose Room.

SRU Theatre presents holiday classic 'A Christmas Carol'
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -Slippery Rock University Theatre will bring Charles Dickens' classic holiday story, "A Christmas Carol" to life at 7:30 p.m., Nov. 30-Dec. 1 and Dec. 3-6. A 2 p.m. matinee is slated for Dec. 2. All performances are in the University Union Multipurpose Room. The production, adapted by David Skeele, SRU professor of theatre, will be a 70-minute, no intermission performance.

Local residents graduate from Grove City College
The following local residents were among the 606 students who received degrees during the Commencement exercises at Grove City College on May 20, 2017. Delivering this year's Commencement address was Vice President of the United States, Mike Pence. The Class of 2017 was the largest class in Grove City College 140 year history. In recent years, the Grove City College's four-year graduation rate has climbed to 78 percent, while its six-year graduation rate has reached 83 percent. The average graduation rate in the U.S. is 59 percent.

Select women recognized at Baldwin Wallace University's 123rd White Rose Ceremony
The White Rose Ceremony is held annually in memory of Philura Gould Baldwin, granddaughter of BW founder John Baldwin and BW's first librarian. At the behest of the Baldwin family, an oration is given and select female graduates participate by carrying white roses that serve as a memorial to Philura whose life was cut short by tuberculosis at age 27. While no criteria must be met, each woman must have, in her own unique way, distinguished herself by making a difference in the BW community.

Students stage 'The Diviners' at Baldwin Wallace University
Under the direction of Jack Winget, a talented cast and crew staged Jim Leonard, Jr.'s "The Diviners" during the spring 2017 semester. Set in a small Indiana town during the Great Depression, the intimate play about hard scrabble luck and hope details the quiet tragedy that can occur when people attempt to confront their fears and reach for their dreams.

Exceptional students earn recognition at Baldwin Wallace University's Ovation Festival 2017
Ovation Festival 2017, BW's annual celebration of student achievement, spotlighted student success in research and scholarship, the arts, experiential learning and leadership, and athletics. The signature event of the 10-day festival was the Day of Excellence, which featured student work from every school of the University through posters, displays, live presentations and performances. The day concluded with the Honors Awards Ceremony that recognized students with scholarships and awards.

Students stage "Enchanted April" at Baldwin Wallace University
A talented cast and crew from Baldwin Wallace University staged Matthew Barber's Tony-nominated play, "Enchanted April," during the spring 2016 semester. Directed by Jack Winget, the play is a joyfully restorative tale set amongst wisteria and Mediterranean sunshine as four women from post-World War I London rent a villa in Italy for a ladies-only holiday.

A talented cast and crew from Baldwin Wallace University staged "The Two Noble Kinsmen" during the 2015 fall semester. The play, a tragicomedy co-written by William Shakespeare and John Fletcher is based on Chaucer's "A Knight's Tale" and draws elements from the relationship between Venus and Mars. Directed by Adam Heffernan, "The Two Noble Kinsmen" delivers the last words Shakespeare ever wrote for theater.

A talented cast and crew from Baldwin Wallace University staged "Dark of the Moon" during the spring 2015 semester. The play, written by Howard Richardson and William Berney, is a chilling Smoky Mountain romance based on the haunting folk ballad, "Barbara Allen." Directed by Scott Plate, "Dark of the Moon" recounts the story of John, a strange "witch boy," who falls in love with the beautiful Barbara Allen.
